Tax Time Again… arrgh. What Would Jesus Do?

It is that fun time of year again… tax day is approaching. No doubt, most of us… with rare exception… would prefer to pay less taxes (or no taxes) to the government. Many are tempted to lie and misrepresent their income to the government in order to reduce their tax bill. We should take care to consider what God wants from us, instead of what we want. There is no qualification about agreeing with the government on how the money is to be spent in order to pay the taxes. We are simply to pay the rightful taxes due.

Romans 13:1-7

Be Subject to Government

      1Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; 4for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience’ sake. 6For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. 7Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

Matthew 22:15-22 

Tribute to Caesar

      15Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said. 16And they sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any. 17“Tell us then, what do You think? Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?” 18But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites? 19“Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax.” And they brought Him a denarius. 20And He said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” 22And hearing this, they were amazed, and leaving Him, they went away.

Ok. So we are supposed to pay the rightful taxes due. Got it. That said, paying taxes is a lot like spending money. We should do so carefully and only pay what is required. There is no “extra credit” in overpaying taxes. In fact, government often uses the money inefficiently and without wisdom. In almost all cases government uses the money without giving glory to God.

We should pay careful attention to how managing our money affects what we pay in taxes. Key decisions in investing and estate planning can have big implications. To ignore the significant impact of taxes on our financial planning is to be irresponsible and likely pay too much money to the government. If you want to give it away … that is great, but find a way to honor God with the money and give it away wisely rather than overpay the government.

Many reputable investing sites have resources to help such as those at Charles Schwab’s online resource center section on taxes or Fidelity’s online guidance and retirement section on taxes. These resources can be very helpful. So too can relatively affordable tax software like TurboTax which make complying with your tax requirements accurate and more efficient… saving much time and headache. If you prefer, consult your financial advisor and tax professional for impacts that you should consider for your financial planning.

The money we pay in taxes (federal, state, local, income, sales, inheritance, etc.) represents a lot of money. Understanding how to optimize your tax burden will help you achieve your overall financial goals more effectively.

Is It Wrong To Be Rich?

Many are confused about money and tend to stereotype people into two artificial categories of people… the “rich” and the “poor”. For starters, even how people view these categories is very inconsistent. People in the U.S.A say there are rich and poor in our country. From a certain point of view that is correct. However, compared to people around the world, even most of the “poor” in the U.S.A. are wealthy.

God has a lot to say about money in the Bible.

Not all “rich” people are greedy and not all “poor” people are virtuous. In fact some “poor” people are greedy. Greed is best defined as the love of money, not the possession of money.

 1 Timothy 6:10 –  For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Ecclesiastes 5:10 –  He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity.

Sometimes scripture can be taken out of context and misunderstood… confusing people to believe that rich people can not be righteous and that being rich is wrong or only achieved through greed.

Matthew 19:24 – “Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

For starters, it is not referring to a sewing needle, but rather a narrow entry into a city… but essentially what Jesus is warning about here is not that all who have money are evil or greedy or cannot be saved. That is not the point. The warning is that often those who have much wealth come to rely on it instead of God, thus presenting a significant challenge for them. Jesus goes on to say that it is possible for the rich man to be saved with God’s help.

Matthew 19:25-26 – When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?” 26And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Some will then say… “why did Jesus tell the rich man to go and sell all his possessions earlier in Matthew 19:16-28 and give all the money to the poor?”

The answer is that Jesus was identifying for this specific man that he (not all rich people) was putting money before God. That was his primary obstacle stopping him as an individual from truly following God. Truth be told, we all need God’s help to be saved. Some may struggle with love of money, but others struggle with different but equally devastating idols or sin such as sloth, gluttony, drunkenness, adultery or sexual immorality, etc.

Not all rich people struggle with love of money. Abraham is an excellent example of a wealthy person who routinely trusted God and did not fall prey to the love of money. There are multiple examples in Genesis including where he lets Lot pick the best land to take for his flocks instead of Abraham picking first (Genesis 13) and again after battle when Abraham is offered the treasure recovered through Abraham’s efforts, Abraham refuses it (Genesis 14:17-24).

Despising people because they have a lot of money or feeling that it is wrong to have money is not biblically sound. It makes no more sense than despising someone because they are poor. Neither position is correct.

Money is a tool , which can be put to use to serve God or used selfishly. It is the condition of our heart rather than how much money we have that determines whom we serve and if we are righteous.

Gaining the Right Perspective on Finances

1 Timothy 6 contains timeless wisdom for us to consider and apply in our lives. As you begin to read, consider that though the slave/master guidance may seem obsolete, perhaps you should consider it in regards to the employee/employer perspective as I believe it still applies in that context or others where you are subject to the proper authority.

1 Timothy 6

     1All who are under the yoke as slaves are to regard their own masters as worthy of all honor so that the name of God and our doctrine will not be spoken against. 2Those who have believers as their masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but must serve them all the more, because those who partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. Teach and preach these principles.

      3If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, 4he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, 5and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. 6But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. 7For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. 9But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

      11But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15which He will bring about at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

      17Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.

      20O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”— 21which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith.
Grace be with you.

We are to treat one another with respect and not enmity, whether boss or employee, slave or master. We do so to shine the light of Christ for others.

We brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing out. Let us be rich in good works. Let us be content, even joyful, with what we have. Let us guard ourselves against the love of money, which is the root of all sorts of evil.

Store up treasure in heaven rather than a bank, though this is not saying to spend and give away all you have. Indeed, we will have nothing to help others if we give all we have away. We should steward it carefully and thus do many good works in the name of Christ.

Should I Put My Trust in Money?

We all face times when we feel like things are not going well and others are against us. David certainly had times when he experienced many enemies plotting against him. Even if all others had abandoned him, he knew he could find refuge in his heavenly Father.

No matter what comes against you, trust in the LORD. Do not put your trust in oppression, robbery, or taking advantage of others. If riches increase, do not set your heart upon them either, but only in the LORD. God is the answer to our needs, not money. He may use money, but we should seek Him first rather than money.

Psalm 62

God Alone a Refuge from Treachery and Oppression.

      1My soul waits in silence for God only;
From Him is my salvation.

      2He only is my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.

Do Not Deceive Others in Your Financial Matters

I find it fascinating as I read the Bible what I may find in what seems like the strangest places. Many Christians and churches will never venture into Leviticus in their Bibles, but we do well to remember that all scripture is god inspired and good to direct our path.

2 Timothy 3:14-16

14You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Paul was referring to the Old Testament as the New Testament was not written yet. It is not obsolete. There is treasure in there that is very applicable today.

The chapters that precede Leviticus 6 discuss various offerings to be made as part of reconciling to God for our sin or guilt. Leviticus 6 reminds of the need to also reconcile with people whom we have sinned against. It also provides a very tangible incentive to discourage the actions described that come about from greed or coveting and represent sin against God and fellow man.

We can clearly see that God does not want us to deceive one another in regards to money. He wants us to deal fairly with one another and treat one another with respect. We are to help one another rather than take advantage of others who may not know better about a certain situation.

Leviticus 6:1-7

Guilt Offering

      1Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“When a person sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD, and deceives his companion in regard to a deposit or a security entrusted to him, or through robbery, or if he has extorted from his companion, 3or has found what was lost and lied about it and sworn falsely, so that he sins in regard to any one of the things a man may do; 4then it shall be, when he sins and becomes guilty, that he shall restore what he took by robbery or what he got by extortion, or the deposit which was entrusted to him or the lost thing which he found, 5or anything about which he swore falsely; he shall make restitution for it in full and add to it one-fifth more. He shall give it to the one to whom it belongs on the day he presents his guilt offering. 6“Then he shall bring to the priest his guilt offering to the LORD, a ram without defect from the flock, according to your valuation, for a guilt offering, 7and the priest shall make atonement for him before the LORD, and he will be forgiven for any one of the things which he may have done to incur guilt.”

As the Holy Spirit reveals to us our sin, we must seek to reconcile ourselves with our heavenly Father to be sure, but also seek to reconcile ourselves with those whom we have sinned against.

Seek Wisdom Rather Than Gold

We all need provision in order to live and God expects us to look to him to guide us rather than doing things our own way. Truth be told many suffer greatly because they pursue financial wealth as their master rather than seeking finances as a tool for the provision and furthering of God’s kingdom.

1 Timothy 6:10

10For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Ecclesiastes 5:10

 10He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity.

Seek wisdom from God rather than gold and silver. With wisdom, you will also find sufficient financial resources and learn to be content rather than covetous or greedy. With wisdom comes joy.

Proverbs 3:13-18

      13How blessed is the man who finds wisdom
And the man who gains understanding.

      14For her profit is better than the profit of silver
And her gain better than fine gold.

      15She is more precious than jewels;
And nothing you desire compares with her.

      16Long life is in her right hand;
In her left hand are riches and honor.

      17Her ways are pleasant ways
And all her paths are peace.

      18She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who hold her fast.

I encourage you to click the link above and read all of Proverbs 3. Prayerfully reflect if you are serving God or money. We all need to spend time working to provide… but often many work longer to get a bit more money and do not invest similar effort in their relationship with God. One quick check is to compare how much time you spend trying to “get ahead” financially by working extra to how much time you spend trying to learn more about God by studying His word and coming before Him humbly in prayer.

Honor The Lord From Your Wealth

It is easy to get caught up in the mindset that all that I have is mine and I can do whatever I want with it. That is what the world teaches. I can just as easily latch on to the tithe concept as taught today, which is to say that I give the local church 10% and then everything else is mine to do with as I please. Another common excuse is “I am not wealthy, but when I am, then I will give to God”.

God, however, wants your heart. He wants you to love Him rather than money. Ultimately He has provided everything you have… either directly by intervention on your behalf or indirectly by creating you with the gifts and abilities you possess and use to earn money. It all belongs to Him. It is right to honor the Lord from your wealth… even if you don’t consider yourself wealthy.

Proverbs 3:9-10

        9Honor the LORD from your wealth
And from the first of all your produce;

      10So your barns will be filled with plenty
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

God wants us to trust Him and rely on Him. He wants the first of all we produce, not the leftovers. Proverbs 3:9-10 is not a “magic formula” you use to control God to give you more money. That is not Biblical. We give our heart to God and thus we honor Him faithfully with the first of what we have, whether we have little or much. We trust God to provide. When we live trusting and loving God rather than money we will prosper. It is through trusting God and applying His instructions to our lives that we find contentment… satisfaction that we have enough… plenty… more than we need. If we constantly compare how much wealth we have to others rather than trusting God’s provision we will never have enough. There is always more money to earn and more things to buy with it.

Trust in God to provide. Follow His instructions… He wrote them down to help us. Pray for His help. Learn to honor Him with the first of your wealth and trust He will provide what you need.

Resist When Sinners Entice You

There are right ways to increase your wealth and wrong ways. The truth of what is right and wrong is not determined by whether or not you gain money but rather by the standards God has provided us in His written word. It is better to be poor in finances and walk with God than to be rich in finances and live without Him.

Proverbs 1:8-19

The Enticement of Sinners

      8Hear, my son, your father’s instruction
And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;

      9Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head
And ornaments about your neck.

      10My son, if sinners entice you,
Do not consent.

      11If they say, “Come with us,
Let us lie in wait for blood,
Let us ambush the innocent without cause;

      12Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,
Even whole, as those who go down to the pit;

      13We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with spoil;

      14Throw in your lot with us,
We shall all have one purse,”

      15My son, do not walk in the way with them.
Keep your feet from their path,

      16For their feet run to evil
And they hasten to shed blood.

      17Indeed, it is useless to spread the baited net
In the sight of any bird;

      18But they lie in wait for their own blood;
They ambush their own lives.

      19So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence;
It takes away the life of its possessors.

Many people profess that they can help you on a path to having more money. Not all of the paths are righteous according to God’s standards. Choose carefully with the Bible as your guide. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you make the right choices, even when the situation seems dire and there may seem to be no easy way out.

It is better to be poor and dwell with God than to be rich and dwell without Him. Even in matters of life and death, it is better to choose the path that leads to heaven than the one that leads to hell… no matter what earthly wealth you may be promised in order for you to take the wrong path.

How Much Should I Give?

There is much debate amongst Christians about how much we should give back to God. Many start with Old Testament guidance by talking about the tithe. Some want to give to show God their appreciation and love for Him. Others give because they feel it is required.

It may seem very confusing, but in fact it does not have to be so. God is more interested in our hearts when we give then in the accounting on whether we gave 10% or 20%.

In fact, the better question is not “How much should I give?”, but rather “How should I steward all of my resources?” or “How much should I keep for myself?” For those of us who receive the priceless gift of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior… as our Redeemer… it all belongs to Him.

Psalms 24:1-2

1The earth is the LORD’S, and all it contains,
The world, and those who dwell in it.

2For He has founded it upon the seas
And established it upon the rivers.

If you give your money to a financial advisor to manage for you, what percent do you want him to give back to you? What percent do you want him to waste selfishly or foolishly? Of course we want the advisor to manage all of it for us, manage it all wisely, and manage it all for our purposes rather than his own. God feels the same way about what He gives to each of us.

God wants us to give generously and cheerfully… as He has given to us. He wants us to use wisely all the resources He has given to us to steward.

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

We should seek God in prayer and listen for the prompting of the Holy Spirit for how to steward our finances including how to give generously and joyfully… and to whom to give. So too, we should consider carefully the counsel God has provided us throughout scripture to validate we are using the gifts He has given us properly for His purposes rather than selfishly for our own agenda.

Building Wealth for the Sake of Having Wealth Is Not, In Itself, a Meaningful Objective

I received the following article from  Bob Lotich at SeedTime Ministries, www.seedtime.com, from one of his weekly emails. I thought this one was good and wanted to share it. I encourage each of you to check out SeedTime on their website.

Contrary to what some believe, the phrase “wealthy Christian” is not an oxymoron. Wealth and Godliness are not necessarily contradictory terms – it all depends on the motives.

Building wealth for the wrong reasons does not produce Godliness but the right reasons will.

Let’s dig deeper.

Five Wrong Reasons For Building Wealth

1. Advice from an “expert”

I know a couple who started buying houses because some financial guru told them there is a great future in real estate. The problem was not the investment itself; it was that they were making financial decisions solely on someone else’s counsel without thoroughly researching that advice and dovetailing it into their own short-term and long-term goals. Not surprisingly, they got in over their heads and had to unload some houses at a loss.

Seeking advice is actually a good thing. Proverbs 15:22 reads, “Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors, they succeed.” Therefore, it is good to listen to seek out several trusted friends and experts for financial advice. Listen and learn and think. Discuss your options with your spouse. Make sure the two of you are on the same page. But never leap into any business venture because you heard it was a “great investment”. That is a bad reason.

2. Everyone is doing it.

Keeping up with the Joneses can be more subtle than you think. Have you ever bought a car because someone you admire has one like it? Do you eat at a certain restaurant because it is the “place to go”? Did you get those season tickets because your friends are all getting them? Did you choose that European vacation because that is what the “in” people do?

Following the crowd is a sign of insecurity and a desire for acceptance. Many will overspend in their desire to emulate someone else, but even if you can easily afford these things, building wealth in order to keep pace with others is not a good reason to do so.

3. Winning a competition

While friendly competition can sometimes bring out the best in us, competition in the realm of finances is an unhealthy game. If you feel like you must out-earn or even out-give anyone in order to win, you will never win. In the first place, someone will always be able to outdo you. But even if you “win”, you have still proved nothing.

If your brain is wired in sports mode, think in terms of cooperating instead of competing. You and your wife are a team. You and your fellow church members are a team. You and God are a team. Be the best team player you can be and you will always be on the winning team.

4. Love of money

People who love money simply because it is money have a warped view of money. These are the people who hoard. Do you love money? If so, you probably have no benchmark established to determine how much is enough. In fact, for you, there will never be enough. You love to check your portfolio to see how much you have, but you always want more. This can be true whether your net worth is $1,000 or $10 million. You are chasing something you will never catch. If you don’t change your priorities you are destined to live a one dimensional, selfish and shallow life.

Hebrews 13:5 tells us, “Let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’”

It is OK to love. Just don’t let money be the object of your affection. Love God first and love others second. The money will take care of itself. Jesus put it this way, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Mat 6:33

5. Security

This is a bit of an enigma because scripture tells us to be wise with what we have…to save and plan and to be able to live without being under constant financial stress. Yes, we are to be wise, but if we believe that we can build enough to give us security, we are mistaken.

First, whatever we accumulate here on earth can be taken away or lost. Secondly, financial security is a ruse. Why? Because it is a cheap counterfeit to true security which can only be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

True security will satisfy your deepest needs and can never be lost. Financial security, even if you had enough socked away to cover all your needs for the rest of your life, will not give security for the life to come. Wouldn’t you like to realize your purpose here on earth and live out that purpose with the knowledge that your eternity is taken care of? That is true security. It can come only from God.

What is the Right Reason to Build Wealth?

To enable givers to give generously

As Paul is challenging the church in Corinth to give to the impoverished believers in Jerusalem, he explains, “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” 2 Cor 9:11

If God expects us to be “generous in every way”, it is up to Him to make us “enriched in every way”.

Summary

God wants what is best for us. He also knows us better than we know ourselves. God wants us to be great givers, not only so those who are needy can be helped but also because we are truly living out our purpose when we are giving.

Do you want to be wealthy? Great. Start by giving. As you give to others, God will enrich your life. Who knows?
